Alpen windows: modernizing & greening on Colorado School of Mines campus

Morgan-nightJuly 16, 2015 –  Phase 1 of the work to modernize and ‘green’ student housing on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, CO is nearing completion, and the School, Architect team, Builder and Installers agree: “the Alpen windows are beautiful!” … “a significant, dramatic improvement” … “our guys were stunned when we drove up to campus this week – the buildings look so different! We didn’t realize new Alpen windows would make such a huge difference!”

The Colorado School of Mines Residence Halls Renovation project is focused on improving livability, beauty, comfort and appeal of four of the campus’ oldest residence halls. Project GC, MW Golden, and design team at KSQ Architects chose ALPEN fiberglass windows for this impressive project, citing primary drivers as:

1) fiberglass window durability

2) Alpen window “customize-ability” – being able to design windows that fit existing openings but instill a completely new look

Why Window Durability became the #1 deciding factor in choosing Alpen windows:

In the mid 1990’s, the school paid to replace all of the original 1977 aluminum single-pane windows with new double-pane vinyl windows.  A mere 10 years later, the vinyl windows are almost completely unusable, having warped in Colorado’s severe UV sunlight, insulated glass units have completely failed, bronze paint faded to a muddy green, and the majority of sashes ceased to operate.

Realizing this, the school swore off vinyl windows forever, and came to Alpen asking for“windows that will last the next 30 years

And so it came to be that Alpen windows are a centerpiece to the $3.7 million residence hall renovation project spanning a two summer time frame: Randall and Morgan Halls this year and Bradford and Thomas Halls in Summer 2016. The four structures together comprise almost 80,000 square feet of interior space.  Recognizing that modernization and campus greening efforts are valuable to prospective and incoming students, the school hired nationally-recognized firm, KSQ Architects to design the work.

With over $1 billion in construction completed in higher education facilities improving over 100,000 student beds on over 50 campuses, KSQ Architects is an established leader in the industry. ALPEN is proud to have been chosen by this award-winning firm, and looks forward to the next campus renovation together.
