Holiday Energy Savings Tips

The holidays are in full swing! After buying gifts, food, and sending out festive cards, you may be in the mood to save some (cookie) dough. We understand, so we’ve compiled a few energy savings tips for you to consider during this special time of year.

Use LED lights

Although slightly more expensive, the instant savings and lifespans guaranteed for up to ten years make LEDs the perfect gift.

Change your furnace filter

Give your HVAC a vacation, and change your filter every 2-3 months or whenever it looks slightly dirty. Efficiency goes up and your bill goes down.

Unplug

Be a Scrooge with the money you spend on electricity. Unplug appliances you don’t use daily to reduce phantom loads.

Skip the fire

Unless you have a heat-retaining insert, your fireplace is most likely costing you money as it takes in conditioned air from your home, heats it up, and pushes it out the chimney.

Add insulation

Keeping the heat in and cold out, improves your home’s heat retention and saves a sleigh load of money in the long run.

Switch to high performance windows

With high performing windows that shut tightly and seal in the warm air, your heater doesn’t have to work as hard, and you never have to feel those cold drafts again.

Make sure your heat sinks aren’t covered

Materials that absorb heat via sun radiation during the day and release that energy at night give your heating system a break while you collect the savings. If you have brick or tile floors that absorb a lot of heat during the day, make sure they aren’t covered with rugs, boxes etc.

Go tankless

Tankless and on-demand water heaters reduce the energy used to keep large amounts of water at boiling temperatures in giant boilers. This efficient appliance deserves a kiss under the mistletoe.

Use your head and be efficient this season. Energy savings really do add up to a stocking full of savings.

Happy holidays from Alpen!
