These are excellent windows for students studying…or sleeping past noon!
The newest (and largest) dormitory at the University of Colorado Boulder just opened, and we’re proud to say the university selected Alpen high performance windows for every dorm room.
About Williams Village East Dormitory:
“The seven-story Williams Village East residence hall will house 700+ students in 20 communities of 35 beds each. Each community includes a study room and open lounge. The floor plan is articulated with two main vertical communication cores serving two and three communities.”
“Designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification for green building, the hall also features various modern, sustainable amenities, including electrochromic glass on the south-and west-facing common-area windows, which help with climate control in the building. Student rooms are equipped with sensors that turn off heating or cooling when a window is opened, and the entire building has been outfitted with LED lights and low-flow water fixtures.”
Building Stats:
- The University of Colorado Boulder’s largest dormitory
- 705 beds
- 177,600 sf
- $96.7 million
- On the way to LEED platinum
About the William’s Village East Windows:
Zenith Series fiberglass frames were chosen for energy efficiency and superior durability. About 10 years ago, CU made a commitment to install fiberglass windows because, through their experience, fiberglass is the material most capable of:
- meeting comfort needs of students
- reducing up-front costs (by reducing HVAC loads)
- weathering Boulder’s high altitude climate–for years
Window Stats:
- 405 Alpen windows (one in every dorm room)
- Zenith Series fiberglass frame sliders
- Egress-compliant limiters for ventilation
- Dual-pane IGUs
Both the installers and the general contractor were amazed at how quiet the windows made the rooms–even facing a busy street with construction trucks rumbling past, outside (and even though the windows only have double-pane glass).
