US General Services Administration (GSA) is wrapping-up Green Proving Ground field testing of our WinSert™ products.
About the GSA’s Green Proving Ground
Green Proving Ground (GPG) uses GSA-managed properties to evaluate sustainable building technologies that reduce energy in federal buildings and have significant savings potential if widely implemented. It was developed to help accelerate market acceptance by selecting promising technologies at the edge of commercialization and piloting technology installations with GSA’s extensive real estate portfolio.
Since its inception in 2011, GPG has identified and provided actionable data on only 27 technologies that could provide “broad deployment potential.”
About the GSA’s field testing
Field testing of Alpen’s lightweight, high performance WinSert products (both WinSert Lite and WinSert Plus) is complete, but the report hasn’t been finalized and distributed by the GSA yet.
So, we can talk about the results, but it has to be in generalities until that report is released.
What we can say about the testing:
- Field testing was carried out in two buildings at Denver Federal Center and ended this past June.
- Testing was for eight criteria, including: Energy and cost savings, cost effectiveness, and comfort.
- Each window was evaluated using 20+ temperature sensors.
- Both WinSert Lite and WinSert Plus were tested.
- Payback periods were determined to be as low as < 7 years.
- HVAC energy savings were as high as 35%.
- Summer surface temperatures were reduced by >15°
- Winter surface temperatures were improved by >20°
- Installation time was even faster than anticipated
- Alpen quad-pane windows were also tested, and while window replacement provides the highest levels of energy savings, secondary window inserts are an extremely cost-effective, high performance alternative to full window replacement for commercial buildings.
Stay tuned for more information on the report, as the GSA makes it available!
