Do I Need New Windows?

How do you know if you need new windows?

You might put up with a breeze or use a space heater in the cold spot next to a window, but do you need to? Here are some telltale factors that you may be putting up with every day—and not even consider an issue.

Condensation

Is your view obstructed by condensation (especially in the early morning)? This could be due to a leaky or even broken window. When warm, moist air comes into contact with something cool, like glass, the water in the air condenses on your window.

If this is happening on the interior of your window—or worse—between the panes of glass, it’s critical that you look into new windows. Air is probably leaking, but even more importantly, that moisture could further damage your window and even the surrounding walls.

Cold or Hot Spots

Have you moved furniture away from windows because the temperature or drafts make it too uncomfortable to be there? Windows are supposed to provide a comfort barrier between your space and the weather outside.

If you’re experiencing drafts or breezes (cold or hot), you should look into sealing the air leak. Those leaks could be occurring in the window itself, or somewhere in the wall surrounding the window. Unfortunately, leaks are often difficult to find and may not be easily sealable, so discuss them with a professional for best results.

High Utility Costs

If you have high heating or cooling bills in addition to condensation or cold/hot spots, new windows may be a good consideration. Again, a professional who is familiar with high performance windows is a good source for recommendations. After the proper installation of one of these windows, conditioned air is kept in, so heating and cooling systems don’t have to work nearly as hard to maintain your ideal temperature—saving you money on your utility bill every month.

Old Windows

Are your windows over 20 years old? They may have reached the end of their useful life. After years of heating and cooling, shrinking and stretching, many windows degrade and become less efficient at their job—especially if there was little maintenance or care over the years.

Cheap Windows

Was the original price “too good to be true”? With windows, you usually get what you pay for, so they may not be well built, made from quality materials, or designed with plenty of insulating components. Or they may be suffering from all three!

Fortunately, high performance windows aren’t out of your price range. Your home is a long term investment, so spend just a few extra dollars and get a quality product: The comfort and savings you’ll enjoy for years to come are well worth it.
